Parents
Our new TAFELink and UniLink initiatives
provide students with the opportunity to follow a non TEE pathway into university.
Great Southern TAFE now has formal agreements with universities in Western Australia
and on the East Coast to accept Great Southern TAFE qualifications as a means of entry into university or advanced standing towards a degree.
For some students, the TEE pathway to university is difficult, either because the curriculum doesn't suit their learning styles, or because of the stress of examinations.
If your child is currently in Year 11 and is struggling with their TEE subject load, then they may wish to consider a TAFE pathway into university rather than continuing to struggle with their current workload.
How does it work?
As an alternative to the traditional year 11 and 12 pathway leading to a TEE, your child can enroll in Great Southern TAFE
at the end of Year 11.
They can combine WACE studies with a Certificate IV TAFE qualification which will gain them direct entry into most WA universities (click here for details). This combined TAFE/high school program is called TAFELink. For more details about TAFELink and combined TAFE/High School studies, click here.
Students can of course also continue their studies in year 12 before seeking enrolment at Great Southern TAFE.
Alternatively, your child could finish school in Year 11 and come to TAFE to pursue a Diploma, which will give them signficant credit in a number of different degrees in WA and Eastern States universities.
What are the benefits?
Put simply, the UniLink pathway will allow your child to gain a qualification as well as meet university entrance requirements.
Some students will find that the industry focus of studies for a TAFE qualification are better suited to their learning preferences than are studies associated with school based TEE subjects.
These pathways are also structured to reduce the time spent studying for an undergraduate degree – this translates into savings on HECs, and can reduce the time spent living away from home.
